Adam's research examines the nature of speech and how it is influenced by disorders and conditions that impact on central nervous system integrity: including depression, fatigue, Huntington's disease and Friedreich ataxia. The research, conducted at the Department of Otolaryngology, University of Melbourne, focuses on both timing and frequency measures of speech and incorporates newly developed techniques that allow automated acquisition and analysis of acoustic data. Adam is also involved in related projects that seek to translate commonly used technologies (e.g., telephone, laptop computer) to broader population based acoustic studies. The use of interactive voice response technology and ubiquitous computing equipment may serve to provide new opportunities for researchers by enhancing access and increasing the feasibility of large longitudinal voice acoustic studies. Adam's clinical work is based at the Friedreich Ataxia Clinic at the Monash Medical Centre and the Bruce Lefroy Centre for Genetic Health Research, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, Melbourne. This clinical role is supported by a strong research base that focuses on the motor speech aspects of the disease.
